Wayne Rooney was born in Croxteth, Liverpool. He was brought up in the council house he shared with his parents Jeanette and Wayne, and his two younger brothers Graham and John. Like any other boy in his city it was always Wayne’s dream to become a footballer. At the age of 9 he joined the academy of the club he supported, Everton.
Aged just 16, Wayne announced himself to the world when he scored a spectacular last minute winner to end Arsenal’s unbeaten 30 game run and becoming the Premier League’s youngest goalscorer in the process. Wayne signed for Manchester United in August 2004, it was a world record transfer fee for a teenager.
He has since gone on to become a global superstar, winning a number of titles with Manchester United and also becoming captain of both club and country. In September 2015, Wayne broke Sir Bobby Charlton’s record to become England’s all-time leading goalscorer. Then in January 2017, Wayne broke another of Sir Bobby’s records to become record goalscorer for Manchester United.
Wayne returned to Everton Football Club in July 2017, 13 years after he had swapped Goodison Park for Old Trafford. Having left for Manchester United as a teenager, he rejoined the Blues at the age of 31 as a five-time Premier League winner. Wayne finished the 2017/18 season as the club’s top goalscorer with 11 goals in all competitions.
In June 2018 Wayne signed for MLS side D.C. United to start the next chapter of his career. Having only played the last half of the season, Wayne finished as the club’s top goalscorer and even made the MLS Team of the Year.
On 2nd January 2020, Wayne returned to England and signed for Derby County. Wayne made 35 appearances and scored 7 goals before before announcing his retirement and becoming interim manager of The Rams. Wayne was officially announced as Manager of the club in January 2021.
On 12th July 2022, D.C. United announced that Wayne would return to Washington after being named as the new Head Coach.
