Following this week’s shocking events in Manchester, the Wayne Rooney Foundation has made an immediate donation of £100,000 to provide support and practical help for victims and their families. With its principle sponsor, BT, the Foundation has also launched a special donations line to help families affected by the attack on the Manchester Arena. All donations will be going to the ‘We Love Manchester Emergency Fund’ set up by Manchester City Council and the British Red Cross.

Details of the service went out during the UEFA Europa League final in Stockholm – which saw Manchester United win against Ajax – and on social media.

Dave Wiggins of MyDonate – BT’s not-for-profit, online fundraising and donation service – said: “There’s been a fantastic response to the appeal following the broadcast during the Europa League final– and donations continue to come in. We’re a founding and principal partner of the foundation, which has already made a £100,000 donation to provide support and practical help for victims and their families.”

Manchester United star Rooney said: “There are moments in life that instantly affect you and stop you in your tracks. Monday night was one of those occasions. Like so many others, I’ve enjoyed great nights at the arena, often with my family. As a father, I’m horrified that a night out for so many young people could end so tragically. My heart goes out all those affected. Please give whatever you can.”

Donations can be made now on line at BT.com/Rooney. Alternatively you can text “CityUnited” to 70800 to make a donation of £5. T&C’s can be found here – bt.com/cityunitedterms
